Restrayned

Restrayned is a melodic hard rock/metal band based in Sacramento,CA. Members include: Johnny & Tony on guitar & main vocals, Chris on bass and Marc on drums. Formed by Tony and Johnny in 2009 but not complete until October 2010 with the addition of Chris and Mark. Mixing influences from several genres creating a sound like a cross between Black Label Society and Dokken.  Combining years of experience touring, gigging, recording and writing, their music is heavy with big vocal melodies showcased by dynamic live shows.

Soil

Soil was originally formed in 1997 by three of four members of death metal act Oppressor, joined by guitarist of another death metal act Broken Hope – as a side project to their other bands. Ryan McCombs was later recruited for vocal duties.

The original lineup of the band was Ryan McCombs (vocals) (currently of Drowning Pool), Shaun Glass (guitar) (ex-Broken Hope, currently of the band Dirge Within), Tom Schofield, Tim King, and Adam Zadel (all three ex-Oppressor). McCombs left in 2004 after the band departed from their label (J Records), to be with his family and later join Drowning Pool, and Glass in 2007, citing personal and musical differences. McCombs was replaced with vocalist AJ Cavalier, also of Diesel Machine.

Soil’s first three releases, Soil (EP), El Chupacabra (EP) and their debut album Throttle Junkies, failed to break the band into the mainstream. It was around this time that all the members of Soil left their other bands to focus on Soil as their main project.

The band experienced their greatest success with Scars (released September 11, 2001). Their success was helped by singles such as “Halo” and “Unreal”.

In 2004, the band parted company with J Records after disappointing album sales of their second major album Redefine. Shortly after, vocalist Ryan McCombs announced his departure from the group. New York-based vocalist AJ Cavalier was introduced on November 15, 2004 as McCombs’ replacement. On July 20, 2005, McCombs was confirmed to be the new singer for Drowning Pool.

On September 21, 2005, Soil signed with New York-based independent label DRT Entertainment. Their album True Self was released on May 2, 2006. The album leaked onto P2P and BitTorrent sites on March 4, almost two months before its official release.

On October 20, 2009 the album Picture Perfect was released via Bieler Bros Records worldwide, except in Europe, where it was released by AFM Records. Picture Perfect was produced by Johnny K (Disturbed, Staind), Ulrich Wild (Deftones, Incubus) and Soil, with Dave Fortman (Mudvayne, Evanescence) handling mixing duties. The first single from this album was “Like It Is”. In January 2010, “The Lesser Man” was announced as the second single.

On Friday, July, 23, 2010, vocalist A.J. Cavalier, and drummer Tom Schofield announced their departure from the band.

Vocalist Jordan Lee and drummer Mike Tignino have been announced as fill-ins for scheduled live dates.

The band will reunite with original vocalist Ryan McCombs for a 12-date co-headlining UK tour with Puddle of Mudd in October 2011 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Scars album.

Toy Called God

Toy Called God is a groove Metal band from Brentwood California that mixes crushing distortion, great hooks and an amazing ability to make your head bang involuntarily. The band was started when a former guitarist delivered a package to drummer Zack Cliff’s house. The pair started jamming and occasionally adding future TCG singer Tyson Cliff to the mix. After Zack and the former guitarist posted a Craigslist ad for lead guitarists, former Pittsburgh Pa. guitarist Patrick Donovan was brought out to audition.

The pair liked Patrick’s playing enough to invite him back the following week, to jam with them and Tyson to see if the match was good for all four. The four then placed an ad for a bassist, and soon Dustin Phillips was added to the Toy Called God mix bringing the band count to 5 members. After rehearsing for few months, it was decided by four members of the band(Zack, Dustin, Tyson and Patrick) that despite all that the now former guitarist had done to help start the band, they would have to relieve him of duties for the band to move forward. Now the band has 18 original songs and is poised to assault stages up and down the West Coast.

Cobia

How does a heavy band manage to set itself apart in an era when anybody with an Internet connection can upload their riffs for anyone to hear? For Chicagoland modern rock quintet Cobia, it’s a much more hopeful approach to a traditionally dark genre of music that springs from the camaraderie between the members of the band and a mutual understanding of what they’ve all lived through in their lives.

There are two main threads in the history of Cobia, but ultimately, they arrive at the same place. On the one hand, guitarist Mike Potesta, drummer Andrew Nelson and bassist Trevor Greene have known each other since childhood – well in advance of their musical aspirations – and have that kind of unshakeable bond that comes with that kind of familiarity. On the other hand, singer Adam Clarke and guitarist Derek Jones both served in the U.S. military in the Middle East, with Clarke doing two tours in Iraq as a field medic with the Marine Corps.

Both of these paths forge brotherhood, either through time, intensity, or both, and that comes through in the band’s music, where the sharing of experiences from the everyday to the extraordinary is funneled through their songs. One of those extraordinary experiences is narrated in the opening track from the band’s debut record Blood, Sand & Oil – produced and recorded by Steven Gillis at Transient Sound in Chicago – in which Clarke recalls the deaths of two of his fellow Marines in Iraq. While that helps describe the emotional gravity that defines both band and singer, it may not be the most revealing story he brought back from the war.

In his first tour of duty in 2003, sitting in a dark, windowless amphibious assault vehicle for hours en route to Baghdad, Clarke would sing, both as a way to pass the time and as a way for him and his fellow Marines to deal with the enormity of what they were going through. This story ends up being an important foundation of the music that Cobia makes. Drawing directly on influences that include Metallica, Pantera, Sevendust, Nirvana, Silverchair , Deftones, The Used, Thrice, and more indirectly from pop, R&B, country and psychedelic rock, it’s a taut, heavy blend of hard rock and heavy metal that wouldn’t be out of place on modern rock radio. And yet, it’s just a little bit different, perhaps owing to that sense of gravitas anchored by Clarke’s war experience.

The music manages to be aggressive without sounding overly angry; bittersweet without sounding overly bitter. There’s definitely a conscious effort from the band to take these stories of love, loss, hate, war, and tragedy, and turn them into triumphs over that adversity, but what’s unexpected is how it comes through in the delivery of the vocals themselves. It’s that armored transport experience in a larger context, or, as Clarke puts it, “Everybody, no matter where they come from, has a war of their own that they have to deal with, that they have to rise above.”

Which is the Proper Way to Fold Toiler Paper?

In this podcast, Civi (from Sports W/ Civi) and I debated the proper techniques of folding your toilet paper properly.  So…what way do you think is the best. I have provided the pictures of the Top 3 down below.

 

This is the first technique, called ‘The Mummy.’  Preferred by some, the mummy is all encompassing.  It covers the whole hand and assures errors are small.  Speed is usually the reason behind the mummy.  This technique isn’t used most often by Civi or Bobby D, as they like their own personal strategies.

 

 

This is the second technique, called ‘The Bunch.’  This is Civi’s favorite way to get a good, adequate wipe of his back side.  Bobby D disagrees with this way stating there this is too much room for error.  Can you get an adequate wipe from this technique?  Will you use more toilet paper when using this technique?  These are all questions that come up when using ‘The Bunch’ technique.

 

The last technique is called ‘The Classic.’  This is the favored technique for Bobby D.  He defends his position by saying that “on this first wipe, there is just an abundance of space, you pretty much can’t miss and your hand will always be clean.”  Civi says taking the time to make these ‘neat’ little sheets is a waste of time. Civi really has a problem with the next thing that Bobby D does with this technique.

 

This is the ‘Classic Fold-Over.’  This technique is used in cooperation with ‘The Classic.’  After the first couple of wipes, Bobby D says that you can ‘fold over again and just use that bad boy one more time.’  This statement made Civi say that ‘Bobby D pretty much plays with his poo and should be locked in a padded room.’  Bobby D still thinks he’s correct.

Isreal Spain

During the birth of his music career, Isreal Spain honed his performance skills in plays on theater stages of his high school in Franklin, Louisiana all the way to Kent State University (in Kent, Ohio) where he attended on a scholarship. Although Spain began his music career recording and releasing tracks with a group of his friends from his hometown, his undeniable talent and his relocation to Ohio inevitably dictated his future as a Solo Artist. Isreal saw this as motivation to push his songwriting skills and  creativity in his own Unique Direction.

With his small town Heritage and diverse list of musical influences (ranging from Mahalia Jackson, to Sam Cooke, to Nas), Isreal Spain seemingly has no choice but to tell his story in a manner that is different from his major city-raised peers. Even in sharing familiar themes, he possesses a tangibly distinctive style in conveying his messages. Upon hearing the album content, it becomes evident that there is more to his songs than simply baritione-tinged, southern articulated verses. His songs often incorporate themes of seeking truth, gratification, reality, and redemption: sometimes with conflicting moral protocol, but such themes are very inspiring and moving nonetheless. Isreal Spain humbly describes his songs as “real music from the pages of his life.”

Stacy Earl

Stacy broke onto the music scene with RCA and her self-titled album, STACY EARL . The album delivered 3 top ten singles, “Love Me All Up,” “Romeo & Juliet” and “Slowly.” The first single, “Love Me All Up,” jumped 27 points on the Billboard Hot 100 in it’s second week on the chart. The follow-up, “Romeo And Juliet” was the most added single in America – a first ever for a new female artist. In Japan, the record was second only to Michael Jackson. With a multi-octave voice that transcends the merely technical, with a heart stopping blend of youthful innocence and worldly sophistication, Stacy brings an unmistakable signature to every song she sings. Attackhead

Attackhead was founded in Orange County, California in late 2002 by guitarist/singer Mark Chapman.

Attackhead self released it’s debut full length CD “Voices in the Dark” in February 2008. The band members have a variety of musical influences from old school metal to death metal to Punk.

Attackhead signed with Twisted Hillbilly Records and re-recorded and re-released “Voices in the Dark – Second Attack” in the fall of 2010.

Attackhead strives to create an entertaining stage show, along with a “Just like the CD” musical performance.

Attackhead is described as Old School Thrash that will make you “Get in the Pit”.

The Stereo Boyz

The Stereo Boyz consist of members Mixo (aka Applauze Beetz), Mic Audio (aka Perfect Hell) and Kid Boombox.

With Mixo and Kid Boombox coming from Detroit and Mic Audio from Chicago they have created a perfect fusion of the Midwest. Combining strong lyrics with catchy hooks, their sound merges the best of both worlds: clever rhymes and beats that any hip hop fan will nod their head or move their feet to.
